The Difference Between Traditional & Gestational Surrogacy

It is no secret that for some couples it is difficult, if not impossible, to safely carry a baby to full term. Fortunately, modern science has provided hopeful parents with multiple options. Through processes like traditional and gestational surrogacy, many couples have the ability to fulfill their dreams of creating a family of their own.

In this industry, we hear terms like “traditional surrogacy” and “gestational surrogacy” often. Unfortunately, the lines can become blurred between the two for many couples researching the best ways to build their family. We are here to break down the definition of each to help you uncover the best path to take!

Traditional Surrogacy: the process of a woman donating her egg and carrying the child; thus holding genetical ties to that baby. In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate mother is artificially inseminated with the sperm of the intended father (or sperm donor).

Gestational Surrogacy: the process of a woman carrying a child with no genetic ties to the child. In gestational surrogacy, eggs are extracted from the intended mother (or egg donor) and mixed with sperm from the intended father (or sperm donor) in vitro. The embryos are then transferred to the surrogate’s uterus.

Until the development of IVF (in vitro fertilization) in 1978, traditional surrogacy was the only option for those struggling conceive. Since this development, gestational surrogacy is certainly the most popular option. In fact, some estimate that 99% of today’s surrogacy arrangements involve a gestational surrogate.

Science continues to improve, giving those struggling to conceive incredible hope and building in popularity. In the last four years, the number of babies born to gestational surrogates grew 89%. Perhaps you have seen headlines about many notable celebrities using this method. The most notable might be celebrity couple, Bill and Giuliana Rancic, who shared their struggle with the world. After many miscarriages, they turned to a gestational carrier, giving them the incredible gift of life with a biological child of their own.

Regardless of what method couples choose, both options give the chance for starting a new family. In some states, finding and using a gestational carrier can be a complicated task. Be sure to consult with an experienced and knowledgeable lawyer to help you navigate the process.
