We reached out to several adoptive mothers who have worked with our firm and asked if they’d like to share a letter for their children’s birthmothers in honor of Birth Mother’s Day on May 9th. Today we’re sharing Jessica’s.
To my Children’s Birth Mothers,
For years I genuinely dreaded Mother’s Day. Infertility and eventually miscarriages left me in this weird space of not knowing whether to sit or stand during the Mother’s Day church service when women were being recognized. In 2014 and again in 2020 because of you, two amazing women, I now stand with two beautiful children.
As an adoptive Mom, I have witnessed the incredible strength associated with both of you. To carry, labor and create a plan that aligns with the life you envisioned for your child is unnatural and requires the most sacrificial love. I will never pretend to know what emotions you may feel around this time each May. I know for myself it is a mix of beautiful and bittersweet.
There is nothing that I can ever do or say that would come close to expressing my gratitude for the gifts that you have given me. Today more than anything I just want to say thank you. Thank you for choosing and trusting me. Thank you for the gift of being able to experience my own set of firsts with these two and for the opportunity to be called their Mama. The courage it took for you to make that decision will never be taken for granted.
So here’s to us, three mothers. Because without either of you, I would not be celebrating. What a privilege it is to be part of your stories.
Jessica
