Job Description: Part-Time Family Building Social Worker

20-25 hours per week

Thompson Dove Law Group is a South Carolina family building law firm with a focus on adoption, foster care, and assisted reproduction law. We are looking to expand our firm with a family-building social worker who works well with an established team and is a self-motivated individual.  We are a child-focused law firm, accepting no case that is contrary to a child’s best interest. Position Overview:

  1. Counseling expectant parents about their options for their pregnancy including assisting in exploring an adoption plan to the degree desired or connecting with appropriate resources if choosing to parent.
  2. Working with prospective adoptive parents providing education and support in a manner that is child-focused and in methods that are best practice.
  3. Assisting all members of the adoption triad, when appropriate, through the firm’s Post Adoption Contact Services.
  4. Taking an active role in case management and social work duties within the firm’s Assisted Reproduction roles, including our Palmetto Surrogacy full-service program.
  5. Assisting in overall marketing of the firm, including social media.
  6. Position will require travel throughout the state and occasional overnights.

Overview of Tasks and Responsibilities

Expectant/Birth Parent Work:

  1. Primary responsibility for maintaining On-Call Line; handling intake calls from prospective birth parents.
  2. General options counseling with expectant parents facing an unplanned pregnancy; providing appropriate referrals in assistance with considering options
  3. Assess situation for various risks.
  4. Completing a needs assessment with expectant parents and managing living expenses appropriately.
  5. Completing Medical and Social history reports for expectant parents considering an adoption plan.
  6. Hospital coordination before, during, and after birth.
  7. Maintaining post-adoption contact between parties when appropriate.

Adoptive Parent Work:

  1. Participate in applicable consultations regarding family building consultations or identified adoption consultations.
  2. Provide support to adoptive families and regular updates throughout pending identified placements.
  3. Schedule and participate in “legal risk” calls with clients and attorneys. 

Post Adoption Contact Work:

  1. Communicating with former clients on their goals regarding post-adoption contact & prepare appropriate documentation for their review
  2. Provide Confidential Intermediary services including mediating a reunion in applicable cases

Surrogacy Work:

  1. Assisting in the screening of gestational surrogacy applications and general case management as needed.
  2. Being an active team member of Palmetto Surrogacy.
  3. Conduct home visits of gestational carrier applicants.

Interoffice Responsibilities:

  1. Working in collaboration with law firm social worker and attorneys to effectuate adoption program and identified placements in a best practice manner consistent with law firm goals.
  2. Maintain CEUs for applicable license and certifications. Maintaining accurate progress notes for cases.
  1. Work collaboratively with paralegal team to ensure timeliness in case progression.
  2. Completing medical and social history reports and record reviews, as needed, for law firm cases.

General Marketing of Adoption Program & Law Firm:

  1. Assist media team in managing firm social media accounts
  2. Maintaining positive relationships with current and previous birth parents.
  3. Maintaining positive relationships with referral sources.
  4. Continue to look for opportunities to increase law firm presence and referral sources to expand adoption program.

Candidate Requirements

Skills:

  1. Bachelor’s in Social Work; Master’s and licensure preferred
  2. Willingness to obtain certification as a Certified Adoption Investigator
  3. Detailed oriented, critical thinker, and self-motivated
  4. Ability to multitask and maintain caseload, notes, and files appropriately

Technical Skills Preferred

  1. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  2. Familiar with cloud-based database
  3. Familiar with social media and website management
