How We Speak About Adoption…Matters

Today, almost two-thirds of all Americans have a family member or close friend who was adopted, has adopted, or has placed a child for adoption. In other words, adoption is everywhere, all around us. For this reason, it is critically important to learn the positive and negative language surrounding the topic to refrain from offending those touched by adoption, and to remain supportive of those in our lives currently going through the process.

The words we choose convey important messages to those around us. They also evoke feelings, intended or not. The language we use to discuss adoption can lead to greater understanding of adoption or it can reinforce negative stereotypes, inaccurate information, and lingering stigmas. Above, you will find a few examples of positive versus negative language surrounding the topic.

We know one thing for certain: adoption is a loving and unselfish act. If you or someone you love is considering adoption, please do not hesitate to give us a call.
